Women's Soccer team spends Spring Break traveling Spain

The Denison women's soccer team traveled across the Atlantic to Spain where they got the chance to do plenty of sight-seeing while also competing against two Spanish Club teams prior to their non-traditional practice season.
The women's soccer team, who has traditionally taken an overseas trip once every four years under head coach Gail Murphy, traveled along the Costa Brava region of Spain to Tossa de Mar, Girona, Blanes, and Lloret de Mar. The Big Red went 2-0 in their exhibition matches against Club Deportivo Blanes and Angles but the success on the playing fields took a backseat to the culture and new learning environments that this trip provided.
The team climbed the Sacred Mountain of Montserrat which features a monastery that is cut into the side of the jagged mountain which rises over the Catalonian plain. They also visited the Olympic facilities from the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona along with a UEFA Champions League game between FC Barcelona and Stuttgart with 98,000 fans at Nou Camp Stadium.
The team also viewed the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi which included visiting the famous La Sagrada Familia.
Current members of the DU team were keenly aware of the amazing opportunity presented to them during their week in Spain.
"Our trip to Spain was meaningful to me on so many levels. It was a great way for me to wrap up my time at Denison, both as a graduating senior and a member of the women's soccer team. Beyond just enjoying the time with my team, playing and touring Spain also afforded me the unique opportunity to take the skills I have gained as a sociology, anthropology and Spanish student at Denison and utilize them in a meaningful way."

"The trip to Spain not only provided s with an opportunity to experience the Spanish culture, but also gave us a chance to experience European soccer as we were able to play two games against Spanish teams. The Barcelona landscape and architecture were amazing as we explored and toured many of the historic castles and cathedrals. Our trip was highlighted by attending the FC Barcelona soccer match which was an experience that I am sure none of us will forget!"

"Ever since I found out about the team going to Spain over spring break I knew that it would be the trip of a lifetime. What I did not realize was that it would become more that just another spring break vacation. It was a journey of immersion within within a foreign culture with the greatest people I know: my teammates. One of the highlights for me was being able to connect with the Catalonian people on not just a tourist level, but through our love for the game of soccer. Opportunities like these do not come around very often."
